       I. Mark Swadley was one of the earliest pioneers, settling on theSouth Fork before 1748, puchasing land in 1762, the same year he andother German neighbors were naturalized. No record has been found as tohis prior whereabouts, although he undoubtedly spent some time inPennsylvania before migrating here.
Family tradition says that Mark inherited a large amount of goldfrom ancestors in Germany which he supposedly buried in a secret place, afterwards becoming mentally incapacitated when he accidently killed adaughter while cleaning a gun, dying without revealing the cache.Administrative bond given 18 Aug 1772 and estate sale 15 Sept. 1772,provide approximate date of death for Mark, dying intestate with estatesettlement 10 Mar 1778. His widow, Catren, (possibly a Maus) may havemarried John Clore of Madison, VA, returning to live with son Henry whenJohn died.
... Early German church records used the spelling "Schwerdli." ...
