Samuel ASHTON

                   Samuel born Feb 1771 in Bristol, Bucks Co, PA and on OCt 14, 1795 married
Hannah Johnson of Monmouth Co, NJ.  Sm and Hannah and their children resided in Bucks County, PA, and NJ until the fall of 1799 when they emigrated to Fayette Co, PA and Sam was obliged to pay $7 per 100 lbs for the transport of his family and goods over the mts. In spring of 1807 they moved to Washington Co, OH, then in 1811 to Clermont Co before its division, where their residence became Perry Twp. Sam's father: William Ashton, who cam from Lancasster, England to settle in Bucks Co, PA.  On July 29, 1761 in Christ Church, Philadelpha, PA, William married Phebe Hutchinson, daughter of John Hutchinson and Ann Stanaland. John's parents were John Hutchinson and Phebe Kirkbride, Jr. Phebe's father was Joseph Kirbride, whose ancestry has been traced through the royal families of England, Scotland, and Europe to Charlemagne.  Joseph Kirkbride, his wife Fhebe Blackshaw, her parents Randall Blackshaw and Alice Burgess, and their family came to America with wILLIAM pENN.  rANDALL WAS PRESENT WHEN wiLLIAM SIGNED THE sHACKAWAXON tREATY WITH THE dELAWARE iNDIANS and helped build the first Quaker meeting house in PA in 1692.  Joseph Kirkbride was a Quaker missionary as well as a magistrate in PA and NJ where he was a surveyor and the owner of vast acreage.  The mother of Samuel Ashton's children, Hannah Ashton, died in the fall of 1810 near Marietta, OH.  Hannah was born 1775.  Her father William Johnson was also born in Monmouth Co, NJ. and served in the New Jersey Militia during the Revolutionary War when taken a prisoner of war was conveyed to NY.  Samuel Ashton mariied (2nd) in Brown Co, on May 12, 1820, Sarah Curless, who was born inNew Jersey.  Samuel died in 1834 in Brown Co.  (Came to Brown County before Oct. 10, 1815).  Samuel was one of the first voters in Perry twp.

The Ashton family was of the Quaker Faith.

TRADITION in ASHTON FAMILY:  Samuel Ashton ad, by years of research correstpndence and investigation, compliled a reliable history of the American branches of the families of father and his mother, down to his time and had edited it putting all  his data in methodical form, and was havfing it copied for the Friends of Historical Society, but unfortunately, the building inwhich the copying was being done was burned down, and with it, Mr. Ashton's manuscripts, including documents, correspondence and the editors notes.
