Historical information included in notes. Joseph NORTHRUP, born 1619 Wilkersfeld, Yorkshire Co.(?), England, immigrated (possibly from Bradford, Yorkshire Co. England) to America, July 26, 1637 aboard the "Hector and Martin"; one of "Eaton and Davenport" Co. ships, died Sept. 11, 1669. He married (1639, Milford, New Haven Co. Conn) Mary Norton, daughter of Francis Norton and Mary Houghton. Their children were: Joseph, Samuel, Jeremiah, John, Sophar, Daniel, William, and Mary.JOSEPH NORTHRUP arrived at Boston July 26, 1637. He came with the "Eaton and Davenport Co." in ships Hector and Maine, and settled in New Haven April, 1638. January 9, 1642, he united with the First Church at Milford, Conn. He m. Mary, daughter of Francis Norton, who came to Milford from Wethersfield with the Rev. Peter Prudden and his party. Joseph d. Sept. 11, 1669, and his will was dated Sept. 1, 1669. The date of his wife's will was Jan. 24, 1683, and the inventory of her estate was taken Feb. 28, 1683. They had the following children: Joseph, b. July 17, 1649; Samuel, b. Oct. 26, 1651; Jeremiah, b. Jan. 14, 1653; John, b. Sept. 7, 1656; Zophar, b. June 21, 1661; Daniel, b. Aug. 7, 1664; William, b. June 2, 1666; Mary, b. Jan. 6, 1670. He was one of "Eaton and Davenport's Company, of good character an d fortune," who came from England in 1637 in the ships Hector and Mar tin. They landed in Boston July 26, 1637, and settled at New Haven i n Apr., 1638. they were mostly from Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, and Ke nt. Members of this company, and of Sir Richard Saltonstall's Compan y, removed to and settled Milford, Connecticut and the "free planter s of the town" were enrolled Nov. 30, 1639; but Joseph, not then bein g in church following, his name (with others) appears in the list imm ediately after the free planters. The surname Northrup was spelled a s here given in the earliest records and inscriptions on tombstones - -rup-- sometimes rupp, and occasionally roop, and more often rop, alt hough this last termination was not common at an early period. Josep h(1), his son Joseph(2) and his sons James, Joseph(3), and Moses, an d most of their descendants, spelled the name Northrup. Northrop, ho wever, was the common form in England.January 9, 1642, Joseph united with The First Church in Milford. H e married Mary, daughter of Francis Norton, who came to Milford fro m Westerfield with the Rev. Peter Prudden and his party. Joseph die d Sept. 11, 1669. His will was dated Sept. 1, 1669. It mentions o f his children only Joseph, Samuel, Jeremiah, and John. Codicil to h is will says, "My mother shall have a living in my house as long as s he lives" -- perhaps meaning his wife's mother, Mrs. Norton. His wif e survived him, and made her will Jan. 24, 1683; mentions Joseph, Sam uel, Jeremiah, (omits John, who probably was dead), Zophar, Daniel, W illiam, and Mary -- the latter two being in their minority -- also he r mother Norton.
