John G. Ernst was born in Germay possibly as early as 1803-1804. Heemigrated to the United Staes while a young man and settled nearSmithsburg, where he was a shoemaker. About 1843-1844, he purchased afarm in Clearspring District, where he resided, and was a farmer for therest of his life.
He and his wife, Julia Ann, were the parents of five chilren: John,William, George, Catherine, and Joseph. John G. Ernst was a member of theDemocratic party and a member of the Lutheran Church near Clearspring,Washington, Maryland.
