Lucy Pleasant is the daughter of Micajah Pleasant and Dolly She died 1867 in Webster Co Mo.. She was age 48 in 1850 census of Greene Co Mo.( 1802) Caswell Co NC... census says born in NC...death from Old Settlers Column Marshfield News dated 1905.. father of Lucy was from the Will of Micajah Pleasant ,says my daughter, in clerk of courts office in Casweell Co NC...Aldridge family of now Webster Co Mo... The founder of the Aldridge family of Webster Co was Richard Aldridge. He was born in North Carolina .. His father was a Revolutionary soldier who at one time was captured by the British and held captive for some time. He made a escape from a guard and fought his way out.. Richard Aldridge married Lucy pleasant. Her father was also in the Revulutionary War.. Richard and Lucy with their five children , none older twelve, came to Missouri in 1839 and settled in what is now Webster Co. They were farm owners in North Carolina and were fairly well prepared for the trip , The oldest of the nine children was Bedford, he was born in North Carolina in 1825 an d came to Missouri with his parents. Though generally tto busy with his farm work for hunting, Bedford spent some time at the sport and became one of best rifle shots in the county.. When grown, he married Christina Grimes, born in 1835 also in North Carolina.. They settled on a claim given by his father .. During the Civil war, Bedford was a sergeant in the Union Army.. Christina Parents were Alexander and Catherine Grimes.. They moved from North Carolina first Indinia in the latter 1830's and on to Missouri in the middle 1840's .. Here Alexander Grimes become interested in herticulture. Looking for a way to improve his apple, he grafted together two that he like very well, the results was a tasty large golden Apple.. He like it so well that he called it the Grimes Golden Apple. Grimes sold his right to it to a nursery and it has became very well known.. Grimes son William David, enlisted in the Unon Army in 1862 at the age of fifteen... Richard Joseph Aldridge was the second son of Richard, born in 1829.. He stayed with his father until 1849 when he joined the gold hunters for California.. his train was the first of them to cross the Great Plains.. Though they would find the bones of twenty oxen at a time, they made the trip without losing their first.. After having traveled about a thousand miles, they came to the town of Bagus,New Mexico.. Here they found that they would not be able to to get across the mountains before the winter snows. Not willing to lose any time, they decided to sell their wagons and teams, hire a guide and pack across the mountians with mules.. After shoeing twenty-five mules never being shod before , Joseph started with the others across the Rockies . After forty-seven days and about seven hundred miles, they reached the Great SAlt Lake.,here they had planned to take the Northern route on to California, but being so discouraged by the stories of distress on it, they turned back south south and took the old Spanish Trail.. There were several desertson it, being so hot that they had to travel at night. Four hundred miles south of San Fransisco, they came to Pueblo. Here they found a beautiful country on which great herds of cattle grazed. Two hundred miles south of San Francisco they reached the mines, the complete trip having taken them seven months and eleven days.. Because it was the rainy season in California, the mines could not be worked until spring. There being an abundance of game there , Joseph was able to make fifty dollors a day at hunting. When the mines could be worked,he made about an ounce a day.. When not mining,he an another man would sometimes make one hundred and seventy-five dollors a day at packing with seven mules.. By this time, everything was very high in California, Pork, flour.sugar and coffee were all sold at a dollar a pound. At the same time in Missouri, corn sold for seventy-five cents a barrel, wheat for thirty seven cents a bushel, and bacon for four cents a pound.. In spite of the high prices, Joseph managed to keep his expense at about three dollors a day.. Everyone did not have luck at mining and some began turning back. There were even reports of three or four men being eaten by grizzlys.. Though there were many hard times, there was as much friendship among the miners as could be found anywhere.. After mining two years Joseph had gotten a quanity of gold and started home by by the way of Cape Horn. On the Voyage he sickened and died and was buried at sea. His friends that were with him brought his gold on back and delivered it to his father... Winds of Disaster Whether they be rich or poor, strong or weak, Black or white in the moment of nature's fury all are made equal On Sunday evening, April 18,1880 the winds of diaster struck this small city of Marshfield Mo nested in Ozarks hills, leaving it foreever scared with memories of tragedy. Weather seemed of little improtance to the inhabitants of Marsh- field on this cloudy, rainey ,Spring evening, but with the onset of the storm those witnessing it soon became painfully aware of its great impact on their lives.. Some thought it was just another wind storm while others thought it was the judgement day arriving.. With swift and horrifying movement from the south- west the storm descended upon the town, and the funnel shaped cloud destroyed everything in its path, leaving a stunned and disbelieving Population. The twisted and mangled remains of a once happy and thriving community struggled in shock to evaluate their losses, bury their dead, and piece back together their lives and their homes.. Medical help rushed by train to the scene. Hospitals facilities were established in schoolsand otner buildings fortunate enough to be left in tact.. The lower story and walls of the Couthouse remained sturdy and a temporary morgue was set up in that facility.. Surrounding communities ralled to the aid of this stricken city and an outpouring of clothing, food supplies, and cash was brought by volunteers who labored tirelessly for days aiding in caring for the wounded and helping to reconstruct homes, businesses, churches and schools. The dead.ranged in age from newborn to the elderly, numbered in the 90's.Wounded were nursed back ot phisical health , some being forever mamed by their injuries... The injuries healed and the town was rebuilt, but the devestating impact of the Cyclone disaster lived on in the minds of those who survived it until they too, were taken in death.. Only history keeps such an experience alive for those of us who trace the footsteps of our ancestors...
