Dr William Wallace Mantlo born Sep 7th 1826 to Richard Wallace Mantlo and Martha Burnett Harris in Robertson County, Tennessee. William W Mantlo married Susan Sarah Stringer on 03 Jan 1858 in Sullivan County, Missouri to this union was born William Wallace Jr, Thomas Watkins, Jefferson Conrad and David Mantlo. Susan passed away in 1869. William then married Sarilda Harrels who was 28 year his Junior on 28 Feb 1870, also in Sullivan County, Missouri to this Union was born: James Marion, Nova Lonzo, Samuel, Bessie E, Wallace Edward, Lencretia G, Franklin L, and Benjamin Harrison Mantlo.
Dr William Wallace Mantlo was a physician in Topsy, Mercer County, Missouri for many years. He was in the Civil War as a surgeon and served in 1863. His funeral service was held at a Topsy Church by Reverand Wm McVay and his burial was at Topsy Cemetery. I believe there may not be a headstone there anymore.

Dr. Mantlo Dead
Dr. W. W. Mantlo, an old and respected citizen, died Monday at his home 1 1/2 miles southwest of Topsy.
He had been in poor health for some years, and this summer suffered two paralytic strokes. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the church in Topsy, conducted by Rev. Wm. McVay, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery nearby.
Dr Mantlo came to Mercer county about twenty years ago from Lion county, Missouri, and settled in Medicine township. He enjoyed a good practice and had a wide acquaintance in the county. Deceased was over seventy years of age at his death.

NOTES: July 2008 - Looking in Ancestry.com I came across the marriage record of Dr William W Mantlo and Susan Sarah Stringer. It reads: To the Clerk of the County Court for Sullivan County State of Missouri This is to certify that on the third day of January Eighteen Hundred and Fifty Eight at the residence of James M Stringer in said County & State I Solomnize the rites of Matrimony between said William W Mantlo and Susan Sarah Stringer and join them together as husband and wife.

Little is known of the Mantlo family before they arrived in Robertson County, Tennessee. The name is so similar to that of the Croatoan Indian, Manteo, that it is only natural to wonder if the Mantlo family traces through Indian blood.
In 1933, there was an old Bible in Springfield, Tennessee, in the possession of a descendant, which contained the following entries: (I will list only the info that pertains to the person on each PAF file)
"William W. Mantlo, born September 7, 1826."
