1. Wilhelm came from Marburg, Germany - near the Black Forest - where his father was employed as a forester. Wilhelm came to America in 1851, traveling from New York to Buffalo via the "iron horse" and thence to St. Louis, where he obtained employment as a gardener on the Francis Blair estate. He and Wilhelmina were married in St. Louis at the home of Francis Blair. Whether this was a shipboard romance or not is unknown, but Miss Beck was employed by the Francis Blair family as a governess.
