                       In 1898 he was in his first year of law school at Harvard. He responded to
    Colonel Roosevelt's call for experienced horsemen to serve in the Spanish
    American War.

    He served with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the assault on San Juan Hill.

    On July 1, 1898, he received minor wounds from shrapnel. However, before he
    could fully recover, he contracted typhoid and died shortly thereafter.
