Ira Nathaniel HINCKLEY

                   NOTES:
    1. The Hinckleys are said to have gone to England with William the Conqueror.  Staffordshire seems to have been the principal seat of the family.  The name Hinckley is said to come from Hink, a variant of "Hench" which means haunch; and lys, a meadow or a tract of land, and meaning of Hinc--Lys " The Henchmans Meadow" or tract.  This was descriptive of the barony given to Grentesmenil by Wm. the Conqueror.  A henchman is a man who stands by the haunch or the horse of his overlord or master-- hench the barony of the henchmans tract.     2.  There was a time when the name was preceded by a de as Sir John deHinckley and Sir Thomas deHinckley who lived in Staffordshire in the reign of Edward III.  The 'e' was dropped from the name in the 15th Century.  The "C" has been dropped by some of the families in America (as in Hinkley).  Two among the HInckley ancestry came to America in the Mayflower.  Bryant S.Hinckley and his brothers and sisters are 8th great grand children of 'Quadequina' -  brother of the Great Indian Chif Massasoit.  They are also the 7th Great Grand children of Thomas Richards.  The Hinckley line is connected by 2 or more lines with the Roosevelt line.
