The Burnham family, one of the oldest in the town of Hampton, Windham county, is descended from that English John Burnham, who, with two brothers, came from England in 1635 and settled at Chebacco, now Ipswich, Mass. Two years later he marched with the forces sent to fight the Pequod Indians. For this service he was given a tract of land. During his lifetime he acquired a considreable property, located on the east side of the stream, now known as Haskell's creek, where he lived until his death. He was a prominent citizen of the little colony of Chebacco and was deacon of the church there. He and his wife Mary had four children: John, Josiah, Ann, Elizabeth.

John Burnham owned, for a short time (1641-1648), part of the estate where the Thomas Safford House in Ipswich was built. The property was conveyed to Anthony Potter from John Burnham in 1648 for 80 pounds.
p 18: John Burnam conveyed to Anthony Potter "a house lott next to Mr. Fawner, to come to the scirt of the hill next the swamp". A part of this lot was granted to Major Denison in 1637. Anthony Potter later conveyed the land to Samuel Belcher in 1672 and is where the Rev. Samuel Belcher House now stands in Ipswich.

1692 - Josiah Burnham married Abigail, daughter of Thomas Varney; she died in 1692.

John Burnham, a brother to Josiah Burnham, signed the Proctor petition in an attempt to save John Proctor and his wife from being hanged during the Salem witch trials. This petition was unable to save John Proctor who was condemned, found guilty and hanged August 19, 1692. Josiah and Abigail might have also signed this petition or played some part in the episode. Abigail Varney, Josiah's wife was a niece to John Proctor as her mother was Abigail Proctor a sister to John.
Two months after John Proctor was executed as a witch at Salem, tragedy again struck the Josiah Burnham household. Josiah died Oct 25, 1692 and his wife Abigail died one week later Oct 31, 1692 leaving three small sons. The baby, Ebenezer, was ten months old and sickly. John Burnham accepted the care of his three nephews and was appointed guardian of them on April 11, 1696.
