Town Clerk Records iin Brookfield, Orange, Vermont record the marriage of James L. Burnham to Fanny Hibbard on 13 May 1813. James L. Burnham was of medium height, heavy set, dark sandy hair and beard, broad but rather low forehead, long eyelashes and eyebrows, dark brown eyes, large blunt nose, very wide mouth when he laughed, broad round chin, not handsome, but one of the best men I ever saw. Fannie Hibbard Burnham was of medium height, straight, fair skin, dark brown hair, high broad and round forehead, dark blue eyes, scarcely any eyebrows, small straight nose, short chin. She could sing like a nightingale, very proud, high spirited woman. She sang scotch songs to her children, indicating a possible Scotch background. March 14, 1820: Item: Subject - Highway District: To take the Bridge near the Burnhams, across Dog River and all to the West of said Bridge and as far North as Moses R. Doles north line. 6 March 1821: Voted and choose Nathan Green, James Burnham, and Freedom Edson as a committee to settle with the overseers of the Poor. James Burnham listed as Pettit Juror and was drawn out. School list in the 2nd School District: March 1820: James Burnham is listed as having two scholars enrolled. March 1822 he is said to have 3 scholars in the Third District. James Burnham is on the military role as equipped on June 1818,1819,1820,1822 Records from the state of Illinois: Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database: James L. Burnham purchased 40 acres for the price of $1.25 per acre for a total cost of $50.00. The land was in the township of Richmond, McHenry County, Illinois. The early name for this area was Montatona/Montalona. The purchase date was 9/26/1840. According to the records, James was the first owner on the land after the Indians gave up their rights. Another purchase in 1844 was made and then voided. This was for a larger acreage - 160 for a total sum of $200.00. Luther Sylvester purchased land in the town of McHenry from George Wooster in 1842. Luther purchased 80 acres at $1.25 for a total of $80.00 in the township of Nunda, McHenry County on Dec 3, 1841 and also he purchased 40 acres at $1.25 per acre for a total of $50.00 on June 1, 1846. He sold it in 1849 to Wm. Colby. (Copy of deeds in my possession). Luther Sylvester married in 1839 and this land was bought with both signatures. In the marriage register from the State of Illinois, McHenry County: Sarah H. Burnham married Abel C. Smith December 16, 1843 Added information is that Sarah is the sister of Luther Emily S. Burnham married John C. Potter May 24, 1849 Harriet F. Burnham married Roswell Merrill Dec 31, 1842 Luther S. Burnham married Charlotte Joslin January 26, 1839 An attempt to find the burial site and dates of James L. and Fanny were unsuccessful. Records at the old Nauvoo burial ground lists James L. Burnham as being buried there October 24, 1843 as well as his son James Lewis on October 8, 1845. Fanny (Hibbard) Burnham wife of James L. died October 13, 1842. This was before James Lewis and family moved to Nauvoo, it could be assumed that James L. went to Nauvoo with his son and family and died soon after. No record of the above girls or Luther S. was found in Nauvoo records.
He married Fannie Hibbard 13 May 1813 at Brookfield, Orange, Vt, Usa . Fannie Hibbard was born at Brookfield, Orange, Vermont 17 Mar 1792 daughter of Roger Hibbard and Sarah Davison .
