George BABCOCK

                   NOTES:
   1.  George Washington Babcock's civil war records indicate that he was
    born  in Chittenden VT but little is known of him from his birth to his
    arrival  in Monmouth IL before 1840.  About 1840 he married Laura A. Wroth and
    they had four daughters between 1841 and 1849 when Laura died. In
    1851 in  Monmouth, he married a widow, DelilahTurner Spraig (Sprague), and she
    bore them 8 boys, five of which lived to adulthood.  In 1854, they
    moved  to Clark County IA and then to Page County IA (Amity).  He was a
    sawyer  and owned a lumber company in Amity and furnished the lumber for the
    building of Amity College.  In 1863 (age 47) enlisted for 3 years in
    the  Union Army as a private in the 8th Iowa Cavalry where he served for
    about  2 years.  Saw action in Alabama and Georgia before his eye was
    injured in  1864 in a non-battle injury.  August 1865 he was discharged and
    returned  to Page County.  After 1868, he left his family and eventually ended
    up in Jewell County KS where he lived with (or near) Mary Babcock Moody
    (daughter from his first marriage) and her husband, Charles Moody.
    Applied for a veterans pension in 1889 while living in Otego, Jewell
    County KS.  Died July 22, 1893 at Fort Dodge Veterans Home near Dodge
    City KS and is buried in the GAR cemetery at Fort Dodge.
    2. Have been unable to trace his lineage before his arrival in
    Monmouth IL.  There is no trace of a George Washington Babcock in
    Chittenden VT.  That could be because there was a fire in the
    mid-1930's  that destroyed a lot of birth records.
    3. It's assumed that George and Delilah were divorced because she
    later  married a William Sonnesberger in Colorado (prior to their moving to
    Wyoming).
