Trusted him with important affairs. An intelligent farmer, a considerable mill owner, a sound man of business, legal adviser and Scrivener of the entire people. Married 3 times (had 18 children). Came to New Eng. 1630. NOTES FROM BACK: Gov. Thomas Dudley - 1. Education - gained in a Latin School toward the close of 16th Century. 2. He was a leader of a company of volunteers - to aid Henry of Navarre, in France - not called to active duty. 3. He studied law under Judge Augustine Nicholls (a Faxton Kinsman). 4. Having been appointed Deputy - Governor of MA, in 1630 - he came to New England on the ship Arbella - with Governor John Winthrop and other. 5. Dudley was governor 1634,1640,1645 and 1650. 6. He was Deputy - Governor 13 yrs. (1630) and Assistant 5 yrs in Colony of MA, Bay. 7. In March 1644 - he became Sergeant Major - General. 8. Dudley was member of the Court which condemned Anne Hutchinson in 1637 (ex- communicating and banishing her from the Colony). 9. One of the signers of Charter of Harvard College. 10. Among his Descendants are - William Ellery Channing, Richard Henry Dana, Wendall Phillips, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Donald G. Mitchell. His Stepfather (excellent) - sent him to college - graduated at Harvard in 1665 (age 18). It was expected that he become a clergyman, but he preferred political life. He was in King's Phillip's War - serving as Chaplain for General Josiah Winslow - on his staff. Later became: 1. Pres. of MA Council. 2. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court 3. Gov of the Colony - (in the Colony's interest - he went to Eng. - 3 times) While in Eng - in 1693 - he received form King William - a Commission as lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Wight - he continued there for 8 yrs. He also served in - the House of Commons - in the last parliament of William III. Had 13 children.
