Wilcox; Their source- Charles Dyer Wilcox Bible p. V(2) p. (1-1) 3. IGI-Nova Scotia-Batch 8401207 p. 82 BURIALS: Deep Cove Cemetery, New Brunswick, CANADA NOTES: Charles had 7 children born in Burlington, Nova Scotia; had 4 born at Deep Cove, Grand Manon Island p.V (2) Charles Dyer Wilcox came from Burlington, Nova Scotia to Grand Manan Island Apr 1826 along with Silas Card and William Henry where they established a shipyard at Deep Cove. Silas was a brother of Abigail Card and son-in-law of William Henry. Four years later the Schooner William Henry was launched. In the meantime the little community was saddened by the drowning accident on 13 Oct 1828 in Grand Harbor, when William Henry James Parker, William Ross and Silas were upset in an open boat. Silas Card swam to shore, the other 3 were drowned. Other vessels built at or near the Wilcox-Card yard were: Eliza in 1832, Abigail in 1833, Venture in 1839 and Brigantine Exile in 1840. Another vessel, the Tallahassie-may have been launched in 1844. This new vessel was anchored off from the Shipyard when it became necessary to move the vessel to a safer anchorage at Parker's Cove. It was while the vessel was being shifted that Charles Dyer's son, Hyrum was knocked overboard by the boom and drowned. His body was found later at White Head Island and buried at Grand Harbor. After the tragic death of his 19 year old son, Charles Dyer retired from active ship building. Previous to this time he felt his luck was changing. The 'Exile' proved a rather unlucky ship. She had to have considerable repairs since launching--one occasion having the bottom sheathed with copper due to havoc of ship works in the Carribean coastal trade. p. V(3) Capt Silas Card was probably back in Kempt Shore, Nova Scotia, by 1835 as his 6th child was born there. From this time on Capt. Silas was actively sailing vessels. He retired from the sea about 1855. He then removed with his family and settled for a time at Pelee Island, lake Ontario and then moved to Elnora, Ontario, where he resided until his death at 96 years of age in 1896. All but 2 of Charles Dyer Wilcox's family remained and lived their days on Grand Nanan Island. Silas moved to Eastport, ME; Mary Wilcox married John Benjamin Card. The Descendants of this Pioneer Family may be found living on Grand Manan Island-from the 3rd generation and even on to the 7th generation (1977). Today many operate the extensive fisheries fleet-obtaining a rich harvest from the waters of the Bay of Fundy. Others hold responsible positions on coastal ships. Some may be found in professions of Science, Education & Commerce--adding their skills to a progressive community.
