80 Heads of Families from Rhode Island left Richmond, No. Kingston, &
Newport, Rhode Island were transported in Sloops & Brigs to mouth of
Kennetcook River.
They went to lands (along the Avon River) in what is now Hants
County, Nova Scotia. The acadians had evacuated the lands and the Governor
wanted New England Colonists to come there. Township Sites containing
12 sq. miles were laid off and lots of 200 acres were offered to appli-
cants. One of these townships was later named Newport (located easterly by
the Avon River, to the South by the St. Croix, and to the North by the
Kennatook Rivers). Here in 1760/61 80 Heads of Families (Grantees) brought
their wives and children.
First Town Meeting was held 9 June 1760. Another was held on 4 July 1760.
Rules & Regulations were drawn up. Grants were officially dated 20 Jun
1761. The combined skills of these craftsmen produced a good community.
They built and sailed Wooden Ships during the 19th Century. Other skills
and crafts were also in the community.
