John Evans NOTE: Taken at age 1 to South Kingstown (Moorsfield) - Sheriff of Washington, RI (Began 1879) NOTE FROM BACK: Became interested in being sheriff because his father was deputy sheriff and Jailor of Wash, Co. - 1870. 1879 - John Reynolds Wilcox - appointed an officer at RI, State Prison - under Gen. Nelson Viall - next year - he resigned to accept position as police constable at Narragansett Pier - held the office 11 yrs. In 1890 - Appointed deputy sheriff and jailer of Washington County. In Jan. 1903 - chosen as sheriff. He was re-elected for a term of 3 yrs - on 9 Jan. 1908. No other Sheriff (in state of RI, - past or present) has a finer record for the detection, pursuit and capture of Criminals. From June 1884 to June 1805 - Mr. Wilcox served as sergeant of the town of South Kingstown.
