1. Stephen Elias Wilcox - Inventor of Babcock and Wilcox water -tube Boiler; - moved to Brooklyn ,New York agter his marriage - Merchant - Representative and Senator once nominated for Governor.
2. From Book #RD9745R - "At a memorial meeting held in Westerly Opera House 10 December 19=893 - Reverend S. H. Woodrow Pastor of the congregational Church spoke as follows (see page 108) He was Honest - was Benevolent, He was 3rd generation in Westerly to bear name of Stephen Wilcox. His father was cashier of the Phenix National Bank , and after giving up that position, formed a partnership with John R. Champlin and carried on a General Merchandise business. He was a man of integrity and sterling worth. He lived and died respected by his townsmen. He was a man of few words and lacked the genial hearty manner that characterized his son. Father involved in Anti-Slavery movement. The only time he could talk readily was when he denounced slavery. His mother Sophia Vose - inteligent and motherly woman. Mother and Father were both Christians by Profession and Practice. As a boy Steven was kind-hearted, generous and full-of-fun, as a young man took part of smaller boys and always had a smile and kind word for them. He had lots of friends, from boyhood to manhood and from manhood to the grave - he was the same genial,hearty whole -souled , kindly disposed Stephen Wilcox, educated in schools of the town. Had the art of thinking for himself, He traveled abroad so he could talk intelligently and well upon a variety of subjects. He never learned the Machinist's trade, but his interest was in tools and Machinery. Many of his experiments were successful.at length, he went to New York and began a bursiness under ther firm name of Babcock and Wilcox and they manufactured tubular boilers. His career as an inventor - covered 40 years. Harriet Hoxie - he played with her as a child, It was a happy marriage. Before he reached manhood, he made a profession of religion and baptized and later uniting with the Classon Avenue Presbyterian Church, of Brooklyn. Religion with him was not something to talk about, but something to live. Soon after their Marriage they moved to Providence and then to New York - She has a park in westerly named (Wilcox Park - and they shared in the building of the Memorial Library in Westerly. she gave much money in donations to several worthy palces (see page 110)
3. Harriet Hoxie was the second child of her parents, her mission in life seemed to be smoothing pathway of others.
