John Hawkins emigrated to Virginia about 1705, according to an Internet history of the Hawkins family. He settled in St. Anne's Parish, Essex County. He apparently had land holdings there. He bought 1280 acres in St. George's Parish in Spotsylvania County on 3 Nov 1724. Another 501 acres were "conveyed to him" on the same day On the land records, he was designated as a "Gentleman." ( Ref. Spotsylvania County Records, Deed Book A, 3 Nov 1724). In the winter of 1724-1725 John Hawkins moved with his family to King William County. where he bought another 400 acres on 6 July 1725. He was a planter and slave trader.

He married Mary Long Abt 1711 at St. Anne's Parish, Essex, Virginia . Mary Long was born at Bassingbourn, Cambridge, England 21 Feb 1681 daughter of John Long and Elizabeth Spencer .
