Notes:
Notes: From "Some Descendants of Peter Pitts of Taunton, Mass.," 1979, by Frances Davis McTeer & Julia Bumpas Berndt. The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, Detroit Public Library, Burton Historical Collection, p. 2: The first appearance of Peter Pitts as a resident of Taunton was in 1643 as a member of the town's first train band. This organization based on a law passed in Pymouth Colony in March 1638 whereby 'All males able to bear arms from 16 years old to 60 years were enumerated and organized into local companies for a training and instruction.' Taunton's report to Plymouth compiled in 1643 lists 54 available men including both William Hodges and Peter Pitts. In 1658, Peter Pitts was a constable at Taunton. A list of inhabitants of Taunton as of 28 December 1659 drawn to facilitata a further division of land according to tax rate and number of heads (of families), shows Peter Pitts assessed for L.1. 00.07 (eleventh from the top of the list of 47 taxpayers) with six persons in his family. On 2 July 1667 the General Court of Plymouth Colony allowed "some ancient freemen" including Peter Pitts to acquire land on the west side of Taunton River."
