founder of Southampton, Long Island The first recorded trace of the name is of "Howel Dda, or Howel the Good," who flourished A. D. 900 to 950. Howel the Good, was the chief and glory of Britons, that he loved peace, feared God and governed conscientiously. The Howells of Westbury, in Marsh Gibbon, County of Bucks, England, descended from Howel, Prince of Caerleon-upon-Uske, in Monmouthshire, whose coat of arms they bore. His father resided on the Manor of Westbury, which his grandfather purchased in 1536, and at his father's death, 7 July 1625, Edward became possessed of the estate, which he sold 8 June 1639, and in the deed is styled Edward Howell, gentleman, of Greevelltorpe, Co of York. Edward emigrated to America about this time, locating at Lynn, MA, where he held 500 acres. He removed to Southampton, Long Island, in 1640, and was one of its founders and a member of the Governor's Council of Connecticut, 1647 to 1653. His death occurred about 1655. He had a son, John, who was also prominent in the civil and military affairs of Southampton. (Pioneers of Old Hopewell, page 165) court records dated Oct. 6, 1655, granted Eleanore Howell all his goods.
