SOURCES: 1. Obituary OBITUARY The deceased, George L. Hakes, son of John and Emma Hake, was born in Florence township, Williams county, Ohio, April 17, 1886. Died at his late residence, near the parental home, on Thursday, March 12, 1914, at the age of 27 years, 10 months and 25 days. His entire life was spent in the community where his mortal career ended. He was united in marriage with Miss Elsie Ricketts on April 25, 1907. Their mararied life, though brief, was happy. One son blessed their union, hallowed their home, and gladdened their hearts. Orlys, now nearly four years old, will be a great comfort to the lonely wife and mother. The deceased has been in failing health for several years. Slowly the insidious foe kept stealing into the citidel of life, and breaking down the wlls, took and held possession. Step after step advances were made in spite of the skilled physician and his remedies. How faithfully did the devoted wife, mother, father, and relatives seek to nurse back to health the loving husband and son. But the climax of all the living came, and the news passed from lip to lip "George is dead." The hard, troubled breathing was over, and the flushed face settled in the pallor of death. He time and again expressed his confidence in the redeeming mercy of his Saviour, and the evening before the morning of his departure, made choice of the ministers to officiate at his funeral service, and repeated the 4th verse of the 23rd Psalm. He derived great comfort from his faith in the divine Christ. Funeral services were held, by his request, in the Berlin C. U. church, conducted by Rev George W. Long, on Sunday, March 15, 1914, and was attended by a large gathering of friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Edon cemetery. He leaves to cherish his memory a wife, little son, father and mother, two brothers, one sister and many friends and relatives. The following lines written by his wife are dedicated to his memory. IN MEMORY Thou hast left us for a season To a cold unfeeling world, But thy dying words of reason, Are like darts of wisdom hurled. In the faith that papa left us Wafted from his feverish lips, We will trust and make a fortress Till our spirits with him sits. With serene and silent beauty We will strive from day to day, To like him perform our duty In our weak, imperfect way. Thus when life's short race is ended, And the world holds nothing more, Will his faith for us intended, Call us to that golden shore.

Notes:
OBITUARY Elsie Esther RICKETTS HAKE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ricketts, was born near Bascom, Seneca Co., Ohio, on the 8th day of March, 1886. At the age of six months she came with her parents to Williams Co., where they have ever since resided. At the age of 12 years she united with the Presbyterian church and in her quiet, gentle way was ever ready to do her Master's bidding. On April 25, 1907, she was united in marriage to George L. Hake. They settled on a farm in Florence township, and started out on life's journey with high hopes of a happy future. To this union one son, Orlys, came to brighten and fulfill their hope. But during the seven years of married life their home was saddened by the long illness and death of her husband on March 13, 1914. Elsie and Orlys came to live with her parents where on July 11, 1924, at the age of 38 years, four months and three days, she gladly answered her Master's call and went to live with Him, where no more suffering is known. She leaves to mourn, a son, Orlys, father, mother, four sisters, one brother and a host of other relatives and friends, that her kind and loving nature had found a lodging place in their hearts. Sister, thou most mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze, Pleasant as the air of evening, When it floats among the trees. Peaceful be thy silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low. Thou no more wilt join our number, Thou no more our songs shalt know. Dearest sisters, thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel. But 'tis God that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal. Yet again we hope to emet thee When the day of life is fled. Then in heaven with joy to greet thee Where no farewell tear is shed.
