Robert Sr. FEAKE
BIOGRAPHY: Was Reverend Robert Feake, Sr. Also spelled Feke or Feeks sometimes. He was a farmer, blacksmith, Mill owner, and pastor of the Baptist Church at Oyster Bay. His house, called "meadow Side" by his successors, was burned a short time before his death, catching fire from an unusual feast of roasted oysters. It was rebuilt by his son Charles, modified by Robert's grandson, Daniel Feeks, Esq. and by Daniels's sons William C. Feeks and John D. Feeks about 1849. Finally, it burned to the ground about 1910, while used as a holiday home fro Brooklyn working girls during the summer. Robert Feke, though born and reared a Quaker, was influenced by the preaching of a Baptisit preacher, William Rhodes, who came to Oyster Bay from Rhode Island, and was onverted to that faith, much against his father's wishes. According to tradition, John Feke came to the water's edge and protested against Robert's baptism to Mr. Rhodes and subsequently his successor and ordained by elders fronm Rhode Esland in 1724. In his old age he was thrust out by a schism in the church. He married, probably about 1704, to Clemence Ludlam. He was the father of the famous portrait painter, Robert Feake (Feke)
DEATH: in the notes for her husband Rev. Robert FEakel Page 564 said she died 8 june 1760 in the notes with the Ludlam family.

Hannah Feake, sister of Mary's great-grandfather, had married John Browne of Flushing, a pioneer in the cause of religious freedom. He was a shopjoiner or cabinet maker.
