Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: David Roe was the immigrant ancestor of one branch of the Roe Family in the usa. He was an early settler of Flusing, Long Island, where he is mentioned in the tax or rate list of 1675. Owing to the destruction of the Flushing land records by fire in 1789, the year in which he bacame a resident of the town is unknown; but it was probably about 1666. His wife Mary was not mentioned in his will, dated 26 Dec 1702, but was livgin in 1698, when the New York Provincial Census was taken.

BIOGRAPHY: David Roe was among the well-to-do citizens of Flushing, owning lands, farm stock, carpenter's tools and two slave, Same and Hannah. He died prior to 12 July 1707 when his will was proved.

BIOGRAPHY: David Roe was probably a brother to John Roe of Brookhaven, Long Island, which lies to the East of David Roe's home at Flushing, Long Island, New York. Both had two sons named John and Nathaniel, and two daughters named Mary and Elizabeth.(???)

BIOGRAPHY: There is some evidence to suggest that David is descended from the Norwich, England Roe family. In Suffolk lived a REv. Nathaniel Roe, a graduate of Cambridge in 1589. He served as rector of the Benacre church in Suffolk from 1614 to 1645.The will of Nathaniel Roe, recorded in the County Hall of Ipswich and East Suffolk Record Office at Ipswich (recorded on microfilm) was written in 1644 and mentions his two children, Nathaniel and Ann, then minors. After the father's death, these two were under the care of the Mary Younge family of Woodbridge. The frequent mention in the will of the Younge family, together with an item in the Parish Register of Southwold (near Wrentham) that Nathaniel Roe was appinted to administer oaths to litigants, indicatres beyound doubt that there was a connection between the Roes and Younges in Southwold, Sufflok, England and this naturally would have been carried over to America.

BIOGRAPHY: There is a strong possibility that the Roe family immigrated, whetherr as Danes to England and Ireland, or possibly from Norway. Bishop Roe, was an Islandic Priest of great learning, who was stationed on the Faroe Islands in the latter part of the 11th centruy. His daughter, Astrid, a woman of charming beauty begat a line of six Kings in Norway. they ruled Norway from 1202 to 1314.

BIRTH: Continuing on (because the biography section was apparently full) Eric, one of the descendents of Astrid who begat a line of six Kings in Norway) who occupied the Norwegian throne from 1280 to 1299, was in the fifth generation in the line of descent from Bishop Roe., married Margaret of Scotland, the daughter of King Alexander the third. Eric later married Isabella, sister of Robert Bruce, who subswquently became King of Scotland. IN the latter part of the 9th century, Rolf, the Younger was banished from Norway by Harold Fairhair, the King, on account of illicit Viking cruises made by Rolf along the southern shores of that country. Among the Vikings that he induced to go with him to Enland and Normandy were members of the Roe family who it seems established themselves at Roen, France. The English line of descent came from Le Rous (ROE) who settled in England in 1066. The Roe family eventually enlarged by immigratin from both Scandinavia and Normany. In England every child bore the family name of its father, but in Norway, and in fact in all the Gothic people, only the eldest son could bear the father's family name.

BIRTH: Sir Thomas Roe, who was a distinguished man in many ways, died in Enland in 1644. In the register of Oxford University there is a record of Roe graduates commencing with William Roe in 1440 and ending with a William Roe in 1569. Within one hundred and twenty nine years 13 member of the Roe family were gaduated from this one University: five of these bore the Christian name of Wililam and 4 that of John

BIRTH: The Roe family penetrated Ireland as early as the 11th century. From McGee's History of Ireland we learn that th Roes were quite numerous from 1260 to 1642. At the last named date Owen Roe was the general in chief of the Catholic army and fought against Cromwell. In the reign of Queen Elizabet I some members of the Roe family were sent into unhappy Ireland for the purpose of quelling a disturbance among its turbuletn inhabitants. The Roes of Ireland were not Celts, but were orignially Vikings from Norway and Denmark or Anglo-Normans from England.
