English Origins of new England Families
The earliest notice of Elizabeth, was the summer of 1632 in Boston, occurs in a
letter from Martha (Fones) Winthrop to her husband John Winthrop, Fr., written
Early in April 1631. She wrote from Groton: "I haue set vp thy box this weeke
and because it was not full I let Bes Web put in her goune for nexte weeke shee
comth up (to London)" About a week later Martha wrote: "Therefo(re) if John
Robinson (the Carrier) come this weeke I would faine hear from thee to know why
John came not doune (to Groton) and what is becom of Bes Webs cloaths..."
Elizabeth Webb was at this time staying at Groton Manor. It is not knowwhether or not she was in the Winthrop employ. She had a brother Henry Webb of
Salisbury, co. Wilts, and later a merchant in Boston, Mass., and John Webb of
Titherly, co. Hants. She was known to Rev. Henry Paynter, minister of St.
Petrock's Exeter, and especially to Paynter's servants James Woodyeates and his
wife.
The LYON returned to England about May 1631. She was probably docked at
Gravesend. After being refitted for sea, the month of July and the early part
of August were spent in getting the stores aboard. Shortly after this the
kWinthrop party went to Sandwich, Kent, where many of them lodged at the
Dolphin, the home of John Humphrey. About the middle of August the sixty-odd
passengers, including Mrs. Margaret Winthrop, John Winthrop, Jr., and his wife,
John Sanford, Elizabeth Webb, and Rev. John Eliot, boarded th LYON probably at
Deal and sailed for New England.
