1Song of a Century 1849-1949: Centennial Book of Manti Utah: Edwin Whiting was in the first company sent by Brigham Young to settle Manti, Utah. They travelled from Salt Lake City arriving 19 NOV 1849. He was a counselor to Isaac Morley (the first presiding elder) in July 1850. He was a member of the first high council created by Presidents Young and Kimball on Wednesday, April 30, 1851. They camped at the on the south side of the stone quarry of the temple. Edwin was on the first city council which met 12 NOV 1851. On 14 DEC 1851, Edwin made the motion on the city's second city ordinance. He served as the Mayor of Manti City from 1857-1861.
