Thomas DeVane and Margaret de Conde were Huguenots that fled from France to avoid persecution and possible death. Margaret de Conde's ancestry goes back to the House of Bourbon, and other French royalty. She was made up as a boy to avoid being recognized, and acted the part of Thomas' page as they fled to Scotland. From there they sailed to the the island of Barbados, and from there to North Carolina. In the Black River Presbyterian Church at Ivanhoe, North Carolina is a bronze plaque that shows Thomas DeVane as one of the elected elders in 1788.
