Edward Ephraim MONTAGUE
EDWARD EPHRAIM MONTAGUE: (from a single sheet found in Sep 1989 in the files and in the handwriting of Vivian E. Haines): I, Edward Ephraim Montague, was born April 1st 1866 at Payson, Utah Co, Utah. My parents, Levi West Montague and Elizabeth Ursula Graves Montague. My father was a shoe maker by trade and had his buiness in Salt Lake City, I understand, in the ZCMI block. (He) had six men working for him, doing well, but Brigham Young called him with others to go and settle Payson - not being a farmer did not do so well, but stayed in Payson until I was three weeks old then moved to Provo City, Utah, where they lived until they passed away. Spent most of my boyhood days in and around Provo. In 1986 (sic-1886) I met a young lady by the name of Esther Marriott of Sandy, Utah. It was at a 'Bow and Apron' dance. The other fellow got her bow; this fellow would not make us acquainted so I asked one of her girl friends to introduce me. She would if I promised not to take her home. This fellow wanted to bet me a dollar I could not take her home. Well, I took her home, and he lost his girl but I lost my hat. In Provo Jan 5th 1887 we were married at our mothers home. (Dictated to me by father. He wished me to write more but we never got at it again - s/Vivian.)
Ltr written 1958(?) to Carson City Bishop Long (found Sep 1989) "Dear Bishop: I am desirous of obtaining a recommend to go through the SLC Temple this coming April, if possible. I was first married Aug 10, 1910 to Lawrence Oscar (Dick) Stewart in Pocatello, Idaho É He was from Cleveland (Idaho) and I from Grace, Bannock County. No children were from this union. I filed for a divorce in January 1915 on grounds of habitual drunkenness and cruelty. All my records were destroyed years later in a fire. I learned Mr. Stewart committed suicide in Seattle a few years ago following several weeks of drinking. É My husband (AEH) passed on March 30 1950. We did not have our endowments while he was alive so am desirous of having this work done now - also would love to be sealed to my father and mother who passed on in 1953 and 1954 and possibly at this time to my son, A. Edwyn, and his wife who reside in Arizona." Other VEH notes state that the divorce was granted 15 Apr 1915 and that she took back her maiden name. Grounds: habitual drunkenness and cruelty. There us a letter 6 Mar 1959 from the Reno Stake Presidency noting that the First Presidency had cleared her divorce 3 March 1959. She was sealed to AEH Sr 3 Apr 1959. Those letters are in her file 1.05.1.33 (Notes) 1907 - organist Grace, Idaho; 1927(?) Sunday School Supt, Wadsworth Community Church, NV; 1934 - Relief Society 1st Councilor; 1934-1945 - Sunday School Teacher; 1958 Primary 1st Council
