Started across the plains with the Jones/Hunt Handcart Company in 1856. William was asked to remain behind at council bluffs to repair handcarts. They fell behind with the Martin Handcart company. They carried deceased son, William, in a sealed metallic coffin and intended to bury him in Zion. Wife, Elizabeth Murdoch, and newborn baby Elizabeth died and were buried along the trail. William and two sons were among the last to be rescued and entered the Salt Lake in a rescue wagon about 15 December 1856. Children were too weak to walk.
He married Jane Jenkins 16 Dec 1864 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah . Jane Jenkins was born at The Stand, Lanark, Scotland 8 Sep 1847 daughter of James Hardie Jenkins and Janett Laird .
