Notes:
RESEARCH NOTE: William Lumpkin came to Yarmouth, ma, in 1637. He was said to have been of Norwich, Norfolk County, England, coming to New England in 1637. He was one of the original settlers of Yarmouth, MA and occupied many positions of responsibility. He is listed as one of the Dennis First Comers: "1639 Lumpkin, William N[ew] B[oston] NW of Whig & Beach S79, R140, D98, Prince Howes 508" "Proprietor & freeman at Yarmouth 1638, deputy to the General Court of Plymouth Colony 1652." His will and inventory are on file. "On January 7, 1638/9 the Governor and his Court of Assistants at Plymouth made a formal grant of land at Mattacheeset, already known as Yarmouth, to Mr. Anthony Thacher, Mr. John Crowe and Mr. Thomas Howes, adding the name of John Coite 'to be enquired of.' At the same time, Thacher, Crowe and Howes were proposed as freemen of Yarmouth, as were Mr. Marmaduke Matthews, Philip Tabor, William Palmer, Samuel rider, William Lumpkin and Thomas Hatch. It appears that all except Coite removed with their families and were settled in Yarmouth, including that part now the Town of Dennis, soon after this grant was made." "Another of the first families to arrive in the new community as that of William Lumpkin and his wife Thomasin, whose maiden name has not been found. the name has not continued on the Cape as the Lumpkins appeared to have had a family of daughters only. . . William Lumpkin served the town as Constable for a brief term and took his turn on the jury and as Highway Surveyor. The Lumpkins owned land in the section now called New Boston, where they were neighbors of the Howes family. It would appear that Goodman Lumpkin was a weaver, as looms are listed in the inventory of his estate. While most families owned spinning wheels, few in this first generation had looms as well. "June 17, 1641, the court ordered William Lumpkin and Hugh Tilly to pay 15s. to Gabriel Whelden for his third part of a skiff or boat they were partners in and for his damage sustained in the want therof to fetch fish to fish his corn with, theboat or skiff to be theirs. [ 2 Plym. Col. recs. 21].
