Historical information included in notes. According to the Luther Barney's Revolutionary War Pension Record (No. W-4124) he was born March 4, 1757 at New London, Conn. He enlisted April 1775 in Col. Joseph Spencer's Connecticut Regt. According to the Connecticut in the Revolution, Luther Barney was a Private in Gen. Spencer's 2nd Continental Regt., 1st Company, Captain Joseph Spencer of East haddam; enlisted May 10, discharged December 17, 1775 (p. 45). Also, he was a Private in Capt. Huntington's Norwich 6th Co., in Col. Sheldon's 4th Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade which was raised in June 1776 to reinforce General Washington in New York. He served in New York and on Long Island; was caught in the retreat and panic of September 15th when New York City was abandoned and suffered some loss. He was present with the army until December 25, 1776 when his term of enlistment expired (p. 405). Luther Barney was certified by the town of East Haddam Conn. as exempt from taxes for the year 1775 on account of military service (Conn. Hist. Soc. Collection).He was allowed a pension for his Revolutionary War service on October 13, 1832 while a resident of Ellery, Chautauqua Co., N. Y. His pension record contains a page town from his family Bible which records his two marriages and the births of some of some of his children. At the end of the war he and his wife settled in Bennington, Vermont; they later went to Genoa, Cayuga County, New York. In 1813 he moved to Newstead, Erie Co., N. Y. and later to Ellery, Chautauqua Co.Luther and wife "Nabby" Barney of Bennington Co., Vermont, sold to Jonas Wyeth, Jr. of Cambridge, Mass. "all our rights to the 1/7 part of the 3/12 part of about 27 acres in Charlestown, Mass., descended to us from our honored Father, Joseph Whinship, late of Norwich, deceased." (Recorded Feb. 3 and July 20, 1785 at Sangate, Bennington Co., Vt.; Middlesex Deeds 94:440).
