Adam Mott's family were Quakers who immigrated to America in 1635. Adam, father, John Mott II, second wife, Sarah Lott, and his children by Elizabeth Creel,departed England on July 2 on board the ship Defence which became infected withsmallpox during the voyage. They arrived in Boston, MA on October 8. The family initially settled in Hingham, MA, but moved to Portsmouth, RI sometime before 1655. Adam was a tailor by trade.
