When his wife, Alfhild, mother of his son, Geirstada Alf, died, Gudrod courted Ase, daughter of Harald the Redbeard at Agthir, near the head of the Oslo fjord. Refused, he with his followers, fought against and killed Harald Redbeard and carried away Ase. They had a son, Halfdan the Black. When Halfdan was a year old, Ase conspired to kill Gudrod. A servant of hers ran a spear through him. When Ase died, she was buried with many possessions in a beautifully carved Viking ship. Ship and possessions are displayed at Bygdoy (the Oseberg ship). NOTES: Known as "The Magnificent" and as "The Hunting King"
