                   NOTES:
The European Emigration Card Index was read: It listed John Shaw, his wife, Lucy, and sons, James and Joseph, sailing on the General McClellan on 21 May 1864. The actual ship list gave John Shaw's ages as 56, his occupation as a French polisher and that he paid their passage from a private account. Lucy Cook Shaw was also age 56. Son, James, was a 19 year old painter and son, Joseph, was a 15 year old iron-furnace worker. Unfortunately, no address was given. Also on board the General McClellan was, which was primarily Mormon converts, at least two other Shaw families. Edward and Catherine Shaw, age 59 and 58, were leaving a Chesterfield home. Edward was a watchmaker. Margaret Shaw and two small children also sailed that day. The Membership Card Index of English LDS Branches mentioned this Margaret Shaw as born at Ashton Lancashire, England. Her parents were Nathan Taylor and Mary Amm Johnson. These other Shaws might be related to John Shaw. The Endowment House Sealings for 8 March 1869 were copied. John Shaw was sealed to Lucy Cook that day with his daughter-in-law (wife of James Shaw), Ann Catharine Thomas, as the proxy. John Shaw gave 14 March 1807 Plymouth, Devon, England as his birth when he was sealed in life.

Notes:
                   NOTES:
According to the IGI, Lucy Cook was born 13 October 1806 in London. Her parents were William Cook and Mary Kelly. The source of this IGI entry was Minnie Margett's Membership Card Index, which was also copied for Lucy Cook Shaw. She was baptized 23 January 1841 at Oldham, Lancashire. Lucy Cook Shaw was also listed in the Early Church Information File. Her burial in Lehi Cemetery was found from that card file. She was buried in the same lot as James Joseph Shaw, a probable grandson, who died as a child on 15 December 1868. Lucy's birth was given on the Lehi Cemetery records as 1806 with a 1868 death. On the 14 Aug 1843 at the St. James Church in Oldham, Lancashire, John Shaw, of full age, and Lucy Riding, also of full age, were married. John was listed as a widower, and his occupation was noted as spinner. Lucy was listed as a widow and her occupation was reeler. Both lived at the same address, "Coppice Nook". It is evident that the financial situation of John and Lucy was near the poverty level. Neither a spinner, nor a reeler, made much money. It was the job of Lucy to keep the spindles or bobbins full of yarn for the spinner. Both probably worked at one of the many textile factories in Oldham. John's father was a tailor. He may have had a small shop or worked in the same factory. Most likely, he was a poor tailor, or he would have educated his son to be more than a spinner. Life was probably hard for both of them. Lucy had four children ranging from eight to eithteen years old, and John had one son by his deceased wife. (Ann Cater)----there was possibly a second son born to John and Ann His name would be Butterworth---- Lucy's father was William Cook, a joiner. The name of Lucy's father was found previously. A joiner was considered a carpenter. Richard Atthill performed the ceremony, after banns had been published.
