Moved to Carroll Co., Illinois and later to Louisa Co., Iowa in the fall of 1842 and to Iowa Co. 1830 and were joined by Esther's mother Sarah Hewitt Tolman and other members of her family. BIRTH: Obituary lists date as 27 Oct 1815. DEATH: The tomb stone copied for Winnie Branen by Librarian, Bonnie Nuv in 1979 gave the following: "Samuel M. Brice died 26 Feb 1891 age 76 years 1 mo. 26 days." OBITUARY: The following is from his obituary in the "Pleasanton Observer": "Dr. S. M. Brice, who died at home of his daughter, Mrs. Eline Bartleson, in this city, February 9 (26),1891, was born in Kentucky, 27 Oct (1 Jan)1815, his father being one of the first settlers of the Blue Grass state. In the summer of 1863 he came to Kansas with his family and settled on a farm near Mound City. They passed through Lawrence just after Quantrel's raid, a time when the prospects of finding a peaceful home on these broad praries did not seem very flattering. A few years afterward upon the earnest solicitation of his friends, he moved into Mound City and began the practice of his profession. In 1876 he founded the Mound City 'Clarion' which he soon afterward sold to R. B. Bryan, now state superintendent of Washington. In 1887 he founded the 'Torch of Liberty.' He is the aughor of several works on finance, and was considered one of the best informed writers on this all important subject. A few days before his death he completed the last chapter of a book on his favorite theme. "Dr. Brice was a skilled physician, a fluent writer and a close student of the subjects of vital interest to his government. His was a most humane and benevolent heart, which showed itself not only in a most liberal charity-as far as his means and circumstances would allow-but in a thousand instances of active benevolence. He was prone to superstition, but not to incredulity. Though his imagination might incline him to a belief in the marvelous and mysterious, his vigorous reason examined the evidence jealously. He was a sincere and zealous Christian, but belonged to no creed or church. In his several works he earnestly inculcated what appeared to him to be the truth; his honesty being constant and the ruling principle of all his conduct. Such was Dr. S. M. Brice-a man whose talents, acquirements and virtues were so extraordinary that the more his character is considered the more he will be regarded by posterity with admiration and reverance."

The contents following from the "Pleasanton Observer." "GRANDMA BRICE PASSED AWAY; Died as She Had Lived, Quietly, Peacefully, Sweetly. Grandma Brice passed away at the Bartleson home Friday evening, 10 Dec 1910. She was almost 93 years old, and the sand of life had simply run out and the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it, leaving the little form asleep on the pillow in the most natural and peaceful position. She died as she had lived--quietly, sweetly and without a murmur. Miss Esther Tolman was born in Augusta, Maine, March 17, 1818. In 1836 she moved with the family to Des Moines, Iowa, where, four years later, she was married to Dr. S. M. Brice. The two families were pioneers, and Dr. Brice was for many years an interpreter for the Indians. Mrs. Brice's grandfather on her mother's side was a Revolutionary soldier, having deserted the British arm and joined the colonist. In 1863 Dr. Brice and family moved to Kansas and located on a farm near Mound City. On their way to Linn County they passed through Lawrence two days after the massacre at that place, and this and other experiences gave them a full realization of border life. They lived in and near Mound City until about 1890, when they moved to Pleasanton, where, the following year, Dr. Brice passed away, and since that time Grandma Brice has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Bartleson. Five (six) children were born to them, two dying in infancy. One girl died at the age of 14, before they left Iowa. A son, Don Carlos, died at Mound City in 1865, leaving Mrs. Bartleson the only remaining child. The funeral was held at the Bartleson home Sunday, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. Withington, and interment took place at the cemetery at Mound City, where the husband and sone were laid to their last rest. At the age of eight Mrs. Brice united with the Methodist church and during the remaining years of her long and useful life she was ever faithful to her religious belief and her everday walk was a sermon of purity and right living. For several years she has been quite feeble in body but her mind was always clear and she was ever the same, noble, christian, lovable little woman." ( Esther was an invalid for many years and sister, Lucy, helped take care of her.) Some research done by Myra Tolman Patterson, SLC, University Stake, 11th Ward; Tolman Book by L.
