O. Box 471, Wyandotte, OK 74370.Page 33"Edward Bennett I, owner of a fleet of merchant vessels, established one ofthe early large plantations in Virginia. He also brought over many settlers(Indentured). In October 1621, after being assigned land at Wariscoyack,(Isle of Wight), Captain Ralph Hamor brought over 120 settlers by February1622. They began clearing the land. A month later, on Good Friday, March 22,1622, the great Indian massacre occured. Apparently, Chief Opecancanough ledthe Warriors of three major Tribes that participated in the attack. Though Ibelieve the attack was directed mainly at the people at Martins Hundred, sincethey had been clearing land claimed by the Indians as their favorite huntinggrounds for about five years. No doubt the 120 of Mr. Bennett's men, nearMartins Hundred, tempted the Indians to attack them also. Edward Bennet lost50 of his men, of the 347 people kiled out of the 1240 citizens that comprisedthe entire population of Virginia (My Grandmother said about one third of thepopulation was killed. Also, according to her, the Indians came back toMartins Hundred the next day, March 23, and killed the men that spent thenight working of the Fort. They were not able to defeat the Indians. Thoughthey had barricaded the unfinished wall of the fort.
