NOTE: James Simmons Henderson was either born blind, or became blind early in life. He attended school for the blind in his native TN, then moved to SC near Laurens County, where his parents were born. He had an older brother, William Bias Henderson, who was practicing law in Laurens and probably had something to do with James going to SC. James got a job at Cedar Spring, about 30 miles away, as the first teacher of the blind at a school originally set up for deaf students by the Rev. Newton Pincknew Walker, a Baptist preacher. Shortly after arriving, James married Rev. Walker's daughter.
He married Frances Fannie Henderson 1 Apr 1810 at Rutherford, Tennessee . Frances Fannie Henderson was born at Milton, Laurens, South Carolina 13 Oct 1787 daughter of James Henderson, Capt. and Ann Nancy Byers .
