Historical information included in notes. 2606) V. JOSHUA,2 b. as early as 1641; m. Mary(*) (???) (2629);lived in Stamford, Ct.; d. in 1690, his widow survivinghim. On the Stamford records we find "Joshwah Hyet" [or Hyot] in 1661 namedon a boundary of land of another party; also the name of Joshua Hoyte in1662, and "Joshwah Hioght" in 1665, as a witness. Jos. Hoyte was on the S.town lists in 1667, and then received a share in the horse-pasture. "JoshwahHiot" was that year chosen "Dromer," to have 20s. a year. Josh. Hoyte waspropounded to the Gen. Court for freeman in "Standford" in 1669. He< seems to have been the administrator of his father's estate, in 1666, for two of his brothers then signed receipts to him for their share of Simon1 Hoyte'sestate [p. 291]. His name also appears on the agreement in 1674,> respectingthe estate of their mother [p. 291]. On the S. records we also find thefollowing: (???)Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight and Hight FamiliesPage 302"Feb. 25, 1668--9, att a town meeting it is voted yt Joshua Hoit shall haue ahouse lott at ye swamp beyond goodman Amblers according as too menapointed by ye town shall lay out hauing a dew respect to ye hiway."On the S. In1683 his cider-mill and press are mentioned. He was constable in 1682, and"townsman" or selectman for 8 years; first in 1671 (then Joshua(*) Hait). Mr.Joshua Hoyt was a deputy for "Standford" in the Oct. session of the GeneralCourt of Conn. for six years in succession, fro m 1681 to 1686 inclusive; andalso at three other sessions during the same years. In 1683 the Gen. Courtremitted the fine imposed upon Joshua Hoyt "for not making up thepayment of his country rate with the Treasurer according to law, he payingthe Marshall's fees." There were thirteen persons from different towns whose fines were remitted in the same way. In 1685 the Gen. Court of Conn.granted to inhabitants of Stamford, Mr. Joshua Hoyt being one of the fewnamed, land now in the southern part of Poundridge, N. Y.(+)In all but 8 or 9 of the entries heretofore given, his name has been spelledeither Hoyt or Hoyte. Hayt has not been used at all, and Hait but once(*) Joseph Hoyt, given in Hist. Stamford, 1686, probably should be Joshua. The mistake probablyarises from misinterpreting the abbreviation Jos., here used for Joshua.(+) Until 1731, Stamford extended four miles into what is now Poundridge.Page 303or twice. There are, on the S. records, 1664--1685, 11 entries of the births ofhis children, 3 of them being repeated. The first one uses Hoyte, the nexttwo Hoyt, one of the others Hoit, and the remaining 7 Hait. On the landrecords of Stamford we find Joshua's name as a witness copied Hoyght in1664; Hait in '70 and '87; Hoit in '73, '81, and '87; and Hoyt in '80. We alsofind that Joshua Hoit exchanged lands with John Holly of S. in 1680, andwith Jonathan Lockwood of Greenwich in 1683; that he sold land in theSouthfield to Moses Knap in '83; that Joshua Hoyt bought land in theNorthfield of Moses Knap, same date; that Joshua Hoit bought land onShiphan neck of John Jagger of S. in '83 or 4, and land in Shaw's swamp ofDaniel Simkins of Bedford in '82. In March, 1685--6, Joshua Hoit andSamuel Hoit were two of a committee of four to represent the town inmaking an exchange of land. Jos. Hait received lot No. 29 of fresh meadowlaid out March, 1688. Joshua Hait, Jonathan Bell, and Jno Scofield were"administrators" of the will of William Potter, deceased, Dec., 1685, entered1694, Mary Hait witness. There was entered in 1698, land laid out to JoshuaHait upon the ridge beyond Dismal Swamp; also more laid out to the estateof Joshua Hait deceased, on Pepper Ridge. On the probate records at Fairfield is found an "Inventory of the Est. ofOn the probate records at Fairfield is found an "Inventory of the Est. ofJoshua Hoit of Stanford who dec'd ye year 1690," filling nearly three pages. It was "taken and apprized by order of ye Towns men Daniel Scofield, ElijahHolly." The amount is about 800, including "twonegrows 80," some sixteen different lots of land, a mill at Myanus river, etc. A list of the eight children is also given, with the dates of their birth, corresponding with the town records, except in a single date.
