    The name Hollowell was originally Holywell and was one of those place nam es so dear to the English. The Holy Well was in Sussex and was suppose d to be of miraculous origin. It was believed to have ben brought abou t by a goat herder finding a saint perishing on the downs for water. Th e goat herder prayed and the well spouted from the rolling hills. This a lso accounts for the goats up on the coat of arms. The Hollowell famil y has been recorded in England since before the Conquest.
