The Weekly Oskaloosa Herald, "Established 1850", Vol. 30 #50, Thursday, August 12, 1880, page 3, 2nd column from the left:
ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE. Tuesday, August 3, Joseph Carpenter died, and was buried the following Thursday. He was one of the earliest settlers of this county and will be remembered as a quiet, industrious citizen. He was born in Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1799, and with his parents emigrated to Licking County, Ohio, when seven years old. He remained there until 1845 when he moved to Iowa and settled in this county just south of Oskaloosa, where he remained up to the time of his death. He was a member of the M.E. church and had been for 55 years. His funeral services were observed in Greenwood church on his farm, his remains afterwards being taken to Eddyville for burial.
