History of Brown County Illinois: The oldest Twombly of whom we have any record is Ralph Twombly (1630-1686) who came from England and settled in Dover Neck, New Hampshire. The Twomblys were affiliated with the Latter Day Saints and it is possible to trace their lineage through the library at Salt Lake City, Utah, from Ralph down to Samuel Twombly (1772-1846) and his wife, Elizabeth Gray (1779-1859). This family came to Illinois, supposedly leaving New England in 1816. They were the parents of Hannah (1811- ); Elizabeth (1820-1864); Almina (1809-1884); Almira (1809-1846); Calvin (1807-1869); and George G., (1804- ). Hannah, Elizabeth and Almina married three Nokes brothers. Almira married Jefferson Cleaves. (See Nokes and Cleaves histories)
Calvin Twombly married Abigal ___________, and to this union were born fourteen children: John C., Elisabeth who married Chas. Raymond; Hannah; John G.; Minerva, who married Wm. Budd; William M.; Samuel; Daniel; Marietta; Alvin, who married Betty A. Cole; George W. who married Harriet M. Smith; Aaron W. who married Hester Ann New; Thomas.
Aaron Twombly (1834-1887) and Hester Ann New (1839- )were the parents of six children: William Henry, 1862, married Clara Woods; Harvey Aaron, 1864, married Elma Perry; Ary Ann, 1866, married Frank Williams; Gertrude Estelle, 1868, married Edgar Williams; James Marion, 1870, married Jessie Bailey and John R. married Carrie O'Hara.
Harvey Aaron Twombly and wife Elma, were the parents of Ethel (Mrs. Don Harney) Marie (Mrs. Harold Duncan). Glen, Opal, Hersman and Oliver Perry.
Edgar Williams and Gertrude Estelle Twombly were the parent so Emil and Opal Williams. Emil Williams married Leila Schug and they were the parents of Alvoid and Lydell Williams.
George G. Twombly, son of Samuel, married Elizabeth or Eliza Meserve. They were the parents of Mary, who married Lewis Rathbun; Adelia, who married William Franklin. William was killed in the Civil War; Nathaniel, who married Amanda Franklin; Lovey, married Semore Brusard and Elizabeth Ann, married Gilbert Gray; Joseph; and Sarah who married James Lambert. The Lamberts had three children: William, Mary and Charles.
There were numerous Twomblys who served in the Union Army in the Civil War.

I don't know anything about Calvin A. but Samuel O. Twombly along with his wife Elizabeth Gray and his children (at least some of his children) came to Illinois from Vermont. 3 of his daughters married into the Nokes family (that's where I come in) I have only gotten to the 3 daughters because I'm so busy following the Nokes line but I do know that Samuel was bor in NH. I believe the family moved to NY and this may be where he met Elizabeth Gray but I don't know for sure. Then they show up in VT. and then on to Ill.His three daughters are Elizabeth, Hannah and Elmina.William Nokes and Elmina Twombley were married at Franklin Co. NY.John Nokes and Hannah Twombley were married at Franklin Co. VT.and Elizabeth Twombley and George married in Ill.The Brown Co. Ill. 1850 census is posted if you haven't been there yet, it's a good source.Sharleen

I am looking for the parents of Samuel O. Twombly/Twombley born 8/26/1772 in Barrington, New Hamshire, and died in 1846 in Brown County, Illinois. He was married to Elizabeth Gray born 7/12/1779 and died in 1859. They were married in Sheffield,Calendonia, Vermont. I know there is a connection to a Ralph Twombly who immigrated to the Colonies in the 1600's from England, but I can't find this connection. If you have any information to help me in my search, please e-mail me. Thank you

I, too, am looking for Samuel O.'s parents. My great-great grandfather was Samuel O's son. Could you please pass on any information that you receive about that line of the family? I would also be willing to give you any information about the family in more recent generations if you need any help there. Thanks a lot Amanda Matya

Hi Laurie,I found that very interesting when I saw that so many of the sisters of one family married into the Nokes. They must have been very close or just found it very convenient? Please feel free to use whatever information you want from my information. I would love to see your tree on the Twombly side. Please let me know when you have it submitted.Teresa

Hi Teresa,
I am a descendant of Samuel Twombly. Three of his daughters married three Nokes brothers who were sons of Jacob Nokes and Mary Fuller. I was wondering if it would be okay to copy some of your Nokes information from your family tree on rootsweb/ancestry trees. If I can help you with any information, please let me know. My 2ggmother, Minerva Twombly Budd married Alanson Nokes after her first husband died.

Long, Nokes, McCormick Family Bible
This Bible was given to me by my Grandmother, Natalie Marie Gustine Stice Richardson Beard before she passed away in 1999.
The Bible was given to Natalie by her Great-grandmother, Anna (Annie) Jane Long.
The copyrighted date inside the Bible is 1853 and the handwritten inscription inside the Bible is:
Almina Nokes Book
Almina Longs Book
A sacred present from her Mother hoping that she may profit by the many truths that are written there in.
Elizabeth Nokes

Joseph and Alminas children:

Mary Elizabeth Long was born May the 21 1859
I believe this was the child of Joseph and his second wife:
Edy Long was born December the 7 1865
Children of Milton McCormick and Almina Nokes Long

NOTE: The Long/Nokes/McCormick families were in Adams/Brown County, IL. I believe the McCormicks moved to Missouri, but have found no record of them. Anna Jane Long married John M. Gordon and they were in Nodaway County, then Cass County, MO.

I have photographs of several of the persons named in this Bible and would be willing to scan and e-mail them to any interested relatives. The McCormick photos are not identified except as McCormicks, half brothers and sisters of Anna Jane Long.
