10-2-1903, Clarinda Herald clipping:
John Porter, aged 47 years, died at Ogden, Utah, Sabbath Sept. 27, and his remains were brought to Clarinda for burial, arriving yesterday afternoon. The funeral was held from the home of his sister, Mrs. Hoag, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. W. Dill and burial was in the Covenanter cemetery.
Mr. Porter's parents brought him to Clarinda from Washington, Ia., when he was a babe. He continued to reside here till about five years ago when he became interestred in mining and moved to Utah and up to the time of his death he possessed large interests in the mines in that vicinity. for a number of years he was in business here in Clainda and has a wide acquaintance over the county.
shortly before leaving Page county he united with the Covenanter Church and has llived a consistant christian life. Last November he contracted a cold which lingered on until death claimed him. He was a strong robust appearing man but has suffered a great deal and did not make the fact known even to his most intimate friends. He has many admirers in this vicinity who regret to learn of his untimely death. Out of town parties who came to attend the funeral are his nephew, Wilson Hoag, of Sedan, Kansas., Mrs. Carson Crawford (already deceased?) and son, Rolla, and Mrs. David Crawford (already deceased?) from Washington, Iowa.

Obituary (probably from newsletter of United Presbyterian Church of Clarinda, Iowa):
John Reid Porter, formerly of this vicinity who died at Ogden, Utah, Sept 27, 1903, was a brother of Mrs. M.J. Hoge, of our congregation. His remains were brought to his sister's home where the burial services were conducted by Reverends Dill and Lowry. The interment was at the Reformed Presbyterian church of which the deceased was a faithful member. The late Mr. Porter was born at Washington, Iowa, and was the scion of a highly respectable and goodly pedigree of Porters and Reids, who came originally from County Armagh, Ireland, many of whom were intimately known and some of whom were related to the pastor and his wife in both Ireland and Canada. By a remarkable coincidence Mr. M.G. Hoge writes us of having met a Mr. Thomas Reid from Armagh, Ireland, now at Medford, Oregon, of the same kith and kin. The late John Reid Porter was a consistent Christian and a true friend and was universally respected and lamented in this community where he was best known. The 131st Psalm, sung at his funeral, which was his favorite, gives a fitting index to the life that had passed beyond. (stanza written next)
