He then moved with his parents to Ohio where they cut their way through six miles of forest to the farm on which they located. He remained there until he came to Iowa in 1850 (or 1851) and located on his son, Luther M Carpenter's present farm in Richland township. He subsequently purchased the northeast quarter of the same section 36 (on a farm north of Ottumwa, Iowa) and lived there until his death, December 28, 1853. He was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He married Sophia Searle, who was born in Vermont, in 1791. They were married in 1819 (April 2, 1820?) and reared the following children: Thompson,Harriett, Charles, Lemuel D, Mary, and Luther M." Ohio  1852 CENSUS Richland Twp, Wapello County, Iowa, Pg 8 (Benj Carpenter head of Hsd) 3 Men 1 woman  The first school kept and taught by a male teacher was in the winter of 1813-1814 in St Albans Twp in the cabin of Benjamin Carpenter, remodeled for school purposes, and the first male teacher was Levi Phelps.  The Licking Co Courthouse burnt down in the late 1800's so although I know Benjaman and his brother, Samuel were executors of their father Samuel's will, (sourced in Licking County Ohio Probate Records 1828-1904,pg 7, item # 136) I can't get a copy of the will to better connect the generations.  The History of Licking County by Hill pub 1881 page 820 shows Benjamin Carpenter in a muster roll of a Company of Mounted Volunteers under the command of Captain Grove Case, of the Fifth regiment, Second brigade, and Third division of the Ohio militia, War of 1812. Going to the internet:www//.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/war1812/roster/1812/txt/page0157.txt shows Benjamin Carpenter,,, pages 419-420, vol 1, serving under Capt. Grove Case's Company 27th U.S. Infantry (Probably from Licking County, Ohio). Served from May 5 to May 18, 1813. Paid for 14 days. A copy of his records from the National Archives verifies this information.
