Note:
The records show in Adjutant General's office, War Dept. that Samul Carpenter served as an Ensign in the 4th Penna Reg. Revolutionary War. His name appears on an undated list of Pennsylvania Officers appointed by the Council of Safety, pursuant to a Resolution of Congress dated Sept 16, 1776. This list shows him commissioned Jan 3rd, 1777. Nothing further has been found of record relative to his services. See DAR #321982(Cleo's) In the history of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family, it says he enlisted "when he was 21 years old on July 9, 1775 from Goshen, Orange Co, NY. He applied for pension Sept 27, 1832 when he was 78 years of age, and was then residing in Licking County, Ohio. His pension was allowed for ten months and six days service as a private in the New York troops. A part of the time he served under Captain Denton and Colonel Clinton." It goes on to say that his father, Samuel, also enlisted as private on June 28, 1775 in Capt. Daniel Denton's company, 3rd New York, commanded by Col. James Clinton. This regiment was raised in Orange County, N. Y. Then his father enlisted as Sergeant in Capt. George White's company, 2nd battalion, New York, at Fort George, Oct 13, 1775. His father also served as private in Capt. John Wood's company of exempt militia in the county of Orange, N. Y. in the service of the U.S. on different occasions from July 7, 1778 to July 20, 1779.

The 1830 Census of St. Albans Twp, Alexandria, Licking Co, Ohio shows Samuel Carpenter, Sr, a male between 70-80 (Sam was 76); a female between 50-60 (Anna Hillyar was 56); and a male child between 10-15, plus a female child between 10-15. (could these be grandchildren or children?) It also shows a Samuel Carpenter between 30 & 40; and a Benj Carpenter between 30-40 (Ben was 39)
The book, " Alexandria and St. Albans Township, Licking County Ohio", pub in 1952, page 21 states that one of the first families to move to St. Albans was the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county, Ohio where they remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the farm known as the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys (now owned by Raymond Tatham.) Upon this farm and at the home of Samuel, Sr, was organized the first church (Alexandria Methodist) and within the walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within the bounds of our township.
St. Alban's township was organized in 1813, and the first election was held at the house of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, in the Fall of 1813. Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for the Justice of Peace in the year 1816 when Sam Carpenter, Sr was elected. The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many contests, and the defeated party is probably still dissatisfied.
The Licking County Courthouse burnt down in 1869 so copies of marriages, wills, probates, etc are lost to us.

The Weekly Oskaloosa Herald, "Established 1850", Vol. 30 #50, Thursday, August 12, 1880, page 3, 2nd column from the left:
ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE. Tuesday, August 3, Joseph Carpenter died, and was buried the following Thursday. He was one of the earliest settlers of this county and will be remembered as a quiet, industrious citizen. He was born in Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1799, and with his parents emigrated to Licking County, Ohio, when seven years old. He remained there until 1845 when he moved to Iowa and settled in this county just south of Oskaloosa, where he remained up to the time of his death. He was a member of the M.E. church and had been for 55 years. His funeral services were observed in Greenwood church on his farm, his remains afterwards being taken to Eddyville for burial.
