RICHARD (DICK) HURST, 44, DIES AT HOSPITAL IN TEXAS
Cancer-Fighter Victim Himself
Richard M. (Dick) Hurst, 44, of 304 Long Drive, Baytown, Texas, a native of this city who resided here most of his life, died of cancer at 11 p.m. Friday in M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Taken ill last May, Mr. Hurst had been in and out of the Houston hospital several times during the past seven months and had been critically ill for the past six weeks.
Ironically he was a victim of a disease which for many years he helped to fight and which also was fatal to one of his two sons, Lance Allyn Hurst, who died March 17, 1948, in this city at the age of eight years.
Mr. Hurst was one of the originators and first president of the Tuscarawas County Cancer Society prior to his son's death and was chairman of the organization's fund raising campaign the year his son was stricken. He was also a vice chairman of the Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society.
At the time of his death, Mr. Hurst was manager of Texco Printers, Inc., of Richmond, Texas, an affiliate of the "Baytown Sun Daily," newspaper with which he previously had been associated as an advertising salesman for four years.
A graduate of New Philadelphia high school, Mr. Hurst was associated with the advertising and circulation departments of The Daily Times for 18 years and was active in the New Philadelphia Merchants Assoc. and was the second president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce here.
In October, 1952, the family moved to Salina, Kan., where he managed a hotel until January, 1956, when he resigned and moved to Houston to join the staff at the Baytown Sun. The family moved to Baytown in May, 1957.
A son of the late Frank B. and Matilda Seibold Hurst, he was born Oct. 9, 1916. He was a member of the Catholic Church in Baytown and was a former member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge.
Surviving are his widow, Maurine Gafford Lantz Hurst, to whom he was married Oct. 29, 1938; a son, Richard L. (Ricky) Hurst of the home; three brothers, Carl T., Dale M., and Eugene F. Hurst, all of this city; and four sisters, Mrs. Irvin ( Hilda) Bernard and Mrs. John (Naomi) Edwards, both of Dover, and Mrs. Richard ( Margaret Ann) Foutz and Mrs. Dean (Lois) Bussinger, both of this city. A brother, Frank R. Hurst, and a sister, Mrs. Harold (Rita) Snyder, preceded him in death.
The body will be returned to this city for funeral services and burial following services here, in charge of The Linn-Hert Co., incomplete.
The family has requested that flowers be omitted. Contributations to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Foundation will be accepted in memory of the deceased.

I well remember Dick's courageous battle with lung cancer. As a friend of the family, I can only tell you that Dick and Maureen and their son Ricky were very well liked and respected. I never heard anyone say a negative word about any of them.
Dick, in particular, had an easy, outgoing personality, always smiling, a natural for the advertising business. Ricky was more reserved but a genuinely nice guy.

Maureen at one time worked in an office supply business in Baytown. They moved to Baytown in the 1950s.

I do recall that Maureen moved to Houston (Baytown is 25 miles east of Houston) after Dick died.

Friend of the family- Wanda Orton

Grand-daughter of Maurine told the story how her grandmother got her name and she was named after her grandmother: Maurine's Mother Anna Gafford was reading a book of poems, "Maurine and other Poems." By Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1888. Anna liked the name and the book so well, that she decided that her daughter would be named Maurine.
