Fiche #18 of 27 microfiche #6051259. page 1691: John, eldest son of Ralph and Elizabeth Twombley, was born about 1660 in Dover, New Hampshire, where his life was passed. He married (first) April 18, 1687 to Mary, second daughter of Thomas Canney, of Dover, who survived but a few years. He was married (second) October 3, 1693 to Rachel Allen. He died soon after July 18, 1724 when his will was made. Children: John, Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, William, Saiam, Sarah, Mary, Rachel, Esther, and Hannah. Most of these lived in Somersworth, New Hampshire. NOTE: Somersworth appears to be in Strafford County on the Salmon Falls River.  Noyes, Sybil etal. Ch. in will: John, Joseph +-73 in 1734, had w. Jane 1726, liv. 1741, d. s.p. Mary, m. Jeremiah Tibbetts(7). Ralph, d. s.p. 4 Oct. 1700. His sis. Sarah Giles listed his heirs 1765 (ct. files 17, 117. Elizabeth, acc. Richard Pomeroy 1694, again in ct. 1703, spinster 1730. Hope, d.sp. Sarah, under 18 in 1684, wid. Giles in 1765. Mark Giles(6) had w. Sarah by 1698. Benjamin, m. 10 July 1721 Hannah Evans, named with 7 ch. in his will 1761--1762. William had w. Elizabeth in 1734, prob. Elizabeth Drew(9) who was Twombley in 1731 and m. 2d a Yeaton. The early Twombley--Twambley--Twombly appear to have pioneered in the south east corner of New Hampshire and southwest corner of Maine. That was all part of Massachusetts originally. Berwick in York County had some Twombley names. Lebanon and Berwick were in York.      Willaim Twombly of Madbury, married first, Mary Ricker, daughter of George Ricker who was killed by Indians: married second, 1737-1744, his neighbor, Abigail (Evans) Hays, widow of Ichabod Hayes, who accidentally crushed by a mill log. Abigail was daughter of Thomas and Hannah(Brown) Evans of Salisbury, Massachusetts, and granddaughter of Mr. John Evans of Dover, also killed in the Indian massacre, June 28, 1689.     William Twombly was a carpenter by trade, and he built and owned a lumber mill on the Isinblass River in Barrington. Here, with his son, John Twombly and stepsons, Ichabod and Daniel Hayes, they built and owned merchant vessels and trading sloops. There is an entry on December 1, 1764, of the cost of building a sloop for Ichabod Hayes, 393.17 franks. In 1746, the sloop Union was built at a cost of 3000 franks.  The plank for this was sawed at their mill.  The old record gives a glimpse of the danger from Indians encountered by these pioneers in penetrating the wilderness, for repeatedly the entry occurs:  To two men a day for guard to Barrington for plank 16sh.
    The sloop was launched on the banks of the Piscataqua River. Her first trip to Boston netted 500 franks. William Twombly was known as  Father Twombly He and Ichabod Hayes purchased land in Dover, Rochester and Wakefield, New Hampshire, which their descendants inherited. The will of the former was proved October 29, 1763. ( Will: New England Register, Vol 8, p. 263.)
