"B.B.B." letter, March 1.OMAHA WKLY HERALD, Wednesday, March 9, 1870, p.4, c.6, 20"Thirty five years after John Burkes death, his brief biographical sketch was published in J. Sterling Mortons History of Nebrask at; Lincoln, Nebraska, 1907, Vol. 1, pg. 606. Based upon the collective memory of family members, Elizabeth Burke Bratt probably wrote the account of John's life that, with minor alterations, is confirmed by historical evidence. Burke, John, at age of 26 years, with his wife Mrs. Margaretha and one son, Daniel, arrived at New Orleans from Germany in the year 1852. From New Orleans, he went with his family to St. Louis, and later settled on a farm at Nauvoo, Illinois, remaining there some 8 years, when in 1860, he moved to Tecumseh, Nebraska, and remained in Tecumseh until 1864.
He was survived by his wife, now living in North Platte; his sons George and Charles, now in the livestock business in South Omaha; Louis, a resident of Portland, Oregon; John, connected with the stockyards in North Platte; Peter, at the home ranch; and Milo at Ten Sleep, Wyoming; and one daughter, Elizabeth, the wife of John Bratt, now residing at North Platte, Nebraska. Two sons, Daniel and William, died, the latter by drowning in the Big Horn River.
