I have copies of her DAR papers and a copy of a handwritten genealogyleft by her grandfather, George Legrand Waters (1826-1917). The DAR linegoes from Waters to Conkey to Martin, the DAR ancestor being General AdamMartin.My great aunt is Mary Austella Cole, mother Emma Waters, to her fatherGeorge Legrand Waters, Maria Conkey, Zeruiah Martin, then Adam Martin.The genealogy only included names, dates and relationships, but no places.The DAR papers had a few places.What line are you descended from Adam Martin? Are you related to SilasConkey? George listed a few more children for Silas Conkey than what I findat familysearch.org and ancestry.com world trees. Martinsburg Cemeteries Contributed by Judith (Wittman) Evenson Seattle, Washington January 2001 The text was transcribed from a 2 page typed sheet (very difficult to read) I found at the William Bush Memorial Library in Martinsburgh, Lewis Co., NY. There are 12 cemeteries within this town, three of which are incorporated cemetery associations. "The Martinsburg Cemetery, as we know it in 1960, is the one on the road leading westerly from the village of Martinsburg to the West Road and on up "Keener" hill to the Maple Ridge country. The purchase of land for the early now termed "old" part of this burying ground, was authorized in February of 1844. The committee named to make said purchase was instructed to spend no more than $25.00 for the land and $40.00 for fencing same with good cedar posts and boards. The cemetery was enlarged in 1846, 1958, 1865 , and has since had several acres added thereto.
This Martinsburg cemetery is now the responsibility of an association known as the Martinsburg Cemetery Association, Inc. It was incorporated March 14, 1910 and is presently a very well kept and beautiful burying ground. William H. Bush, a native of Martinsburg, who died in 1931, made a provision in his will that 1/72 of the income of a trust fund should be paid to the Martinsburg Cemetery for its maintenance. The Glendal Cemetery atop the hill, west of Glendale is also a very well kept cemetery. It was incorporated in 1923. The East Martinsburg Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1932. At the first meeting of the directors, Aug. 5, 1932, the following officers were elected: Eleazer Stiles, President; Herbert Goodrich, Vice-President; Albert Stiles, Secretary and Treasurer. The Town of Martinsburg is responsible for nine small cemeteries, none of which are well cared for at this date, and many seemingly abandoned and forgotten. They have become overgrown with brush and trees, fences are down and many monuments in ruin, has ....... pg 2 - These are as follows: West Martinsburg; Chapel Hill, on the Flat ...ck Road; Ashback; Hector (or Rector) road; Maple Ridge; Pitcher on a cross road, some three quarters mile north of Whetstone Park; Staring (on Pansy Hill) Loucks; Strader on a crossroad between the Gardner road and Rector road, now abandoned; and the oldest of all, the first Martinsburg Cemetery on a hogsback or ridge visable from Route 12-D some three quarters mile south of the village of Martinsburg. Here are some 25 graves of the early settlers. Col. Adam Martin & Abigail (Cheney) Martin were the parents of General Walter Martin 1766-1834 (War of 1812).
Gen. Walter Martin was the founder of Martinsburgh, Lewis Co., NY. Also spelled Martinburg. During my 1st visit to Martinsburgh in the Fall of 1989, I gave a donation of $100.00 to the Martinsburg Fire Dept. for them to help me locate the "first Martinsburg Cemetery on a hogsback or ridge visible from Route 12-D, where 25 graves of the early settlers are located". They took me to the spot, but it is so overgrown with brush & trees, etc., that it was impossible to locate any grave stones. I feel my Rev. War ancestor Col./Capt. Adam Martin, b. 1739, who died in 1818 & his wife Abigail (Cheney) Martin who died in 1820, were/are buried in the old /first Martinsburgh Cemetery.
There is a badly worn marker in the "newest" Martinsburgh Cemetery on the plot where General Walter Martin was re-interred which read "In Memory of Col. Adam Martin.......'"General Walter Martin (War of 1812) table-like stone is also badly worn & difficult to read. I will try to get US Military markers placed on both of these graves/plots as I understand the government will replace/add a marker with a military marker if the stone is worn & unable to read. I also have in my notes: George Davis-former Judge Lewis Co. Soldiers buried in the "new" Martinsburg Cemetery: Rev. War (4): Col Adam Martin; Reuben Pitcher, Sr.; John Stibbins and Caleb Sturdevent. MARTINSBURGH1 -- was formed from Turin, Feb. 22, 1803, and a part of Turin was annexed in 1819. It lies upon the W. bank of Black River, near the center of the co. It has an easterly inclination, its W. border being nearly 1000 feet above the river valley. Its surface is rolling, with a wide, level intervale bordering upon the river. The principal streams are Martins and Whetstone Creeks.2 The soil is a deep, fertile loam, except along the river, where it is sandy. Near the head of Whetstone Gulf is a sulphur spring. Martinsburgh (p.v.) is situated on Martins Creek, near the center of the town. It contains the co. buildings, 3 churches, and a newspaper office. Pop. 2l0. West Martinsburgh, (p.v.,) in the N. part of the town, has a pop. of 164. Glensdale, (p.o.,) in the S. E. part, is a hamlet of about 12 dwellings. Settlement was begun by Gen. Walter Martin, at Martinsburgh, in 1801.3 The first church (Presb.) was organized in 1804, by Rev. Elijah Norton. There are 7 churches in town.4
1This town embraces Township No. 4, or Cornells, of the Boylston Tract, and Porcia and a part of Lucretia, of Constable's Towns.2Maritins Creek was formerly called Roaring Brook." At Chimney Point, near the center of the town, this stream has worn a channel through the shale and Utica slate, for 2 mi., to the depth of 200 to 250 feet. This remarkable chasm above the "Chimney" is tortuous, with precipitous sides, and in many places is so narrow that the stream occupies the entire space between the ledges. Whetstone Gulf, upon Whetstone Creek, in the S. part of the town, is a similar ravine.3Among the first settlers were Elijah Baldwin, Mrs. Richard Arthur and sons, Reuben Pitcher and sons, N. Cheney, Eli Rogers, Ebud Stephens, N. Alexander, Stephen Searle, Joseph Sheldon, Chillus Doty, A. Conkey, D. Ashley, S. Gowdy, C. and D. Shumway, and J. and O. Moore. W. Martin built the first mills, and in 1807 a paper mill.4 2 M. E., 2 Union, Bap., Presb., and Second Advent.
