Fall River County History:
W.J.(sic) March
W.J. March, the father of J.J., Albert and Tom, came to the Black Hills in 1890. He first settled in Hill City and a few months later came to Hot Springs with his two sons, J.J. and Albert. Tom stayed in Hill City.
J.J. married Edith Wycoff, Norfolk, Neb., 1894. Three sons were born to this union: Leonard, Kenneth and Stanley. J.J. started the March grocery store.
Albert filed on a claim on Cold Brook and married Bertha Kneuppel in October 1903. They moved to his homestead west of town.
Tom operated a store in Hill City. He married Minnie Phomder (sic). They had two sons. Guy was a teacher at the School of Mines and is now retired. Their son Raymond passed away young.
Tom was very cooperative, buying his meats from ranchers as J.J. was with garden produce in Hot Springs. Tom had the first auto in Hill City and offered to give all the kids a ride. He was killed accidentally while trying to help a tourist start his auto.
Albert had two boys and two girls: Juelius (Iowa), Emma, Etla, and Richard (all in Hot Springs). Albert and J.J. set up a dairy farm where Albert worked until ill health forced him to retire. Richard now has the ranch.
Mr. March died in 1954, and Mrs. March died Feb 16, 1968.
                                                                                     by Mrs. Albert March
