Same source says David, (a younger brother) and his family united with the church ine 1839 in Lima, Adams, Iowa.Note: Jedediah M. Grant introduced the gospel in N. Car. in 1838. He met with great success. In 1839 he was joined by Joshua Grant and the 2 Elders baptized about 40 people. Branches of the church had been raised in Surrey and Stokes Co. Indiana has had LDS mission since 1831. In the summer of 1831 Samuel H. Smith and Reynolds Cahoun preached in Unionville, Ohio Co. as the first missionaries in Indiana. In Sept 1831 P.P. Pratt and Orson Pratt organized branches. In 1834 Joseph Smith and Zions Camp passed through Indiana. In 1831 the missionaries preached in Madison, Jefferson, and Scott Counties, Indiana. HISTORY: 1) "Phillip united with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. In 1843 he was ordained a high priest and served as a high councilman in Lima, Adams, Illinois (HC 5:427-28). He was endowed on 6 February 1846 in the Nauvoo Temple (Nauvoo Temple Register). He suffered from religious persecution in Illinois and fled to safety in Iowa Territory. In Council Bluffs, Phillip and his brothers David Garner and William A. Garner enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. They marched with the battalion from Council Bluffs to Santa Fe. On the march, Phillip fell into a deep ravine and broke three ribs, and was subsequently assigned to the sick detachment to winter in Fort Pueblo. After wintering at the fort he migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, arriving on 27 July 1847 (Pension File). On 16 August 1847 he left the valley for Council Bluffs (Esshom, Pioneers, 885). After uniting with his family, he migrated back to the Valley in the George A. Smith Company, arriving on 27 October 1849. In 1850 Phillip settled with his family in Ogden, Weber, Utah, where he was given a patriarchal blessing on September 1854 by Isaac Morley (Patriarchal Blessing Index, 15:170). On 24 May 1862 he was sealed to his wife in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City (TIB). By 1870 he possessed only $20 in real wealth (Utah Federal Census, 1870). Phillip died from rheumatism. 2) "Came to Utah October 27, 1849, George A. Smith Company. Member of the Mormon Battalion in Company B, under Capt. Jesse D. Hunter. He enlisted July 16, 1846. Was hurt on picket duty while en route to Sante Fe, N.M., by falling into a deep ravine and breaking three ribs. Was returned to Pueblo [Colorado] and was afterward honorably released and returned home to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In the spring of 1849 himself and family journeyed in a wagon drawn by oxteam over the plains to Utah. Farmer. Died Sept. 16, 1872."
