                       Edith Duncan recorded the following about John Smuin in her Family Journal.  "John Smuin was an apprentice in the linen trade in England when a young boy.  He came to America with his parents and sisters in a group of emigrants at age 13.  His parents stopped in N.Y. but he came on to Odgen Utah with his sister Martha Smuin McFarlane on the first train to cross the country as far as Ogden."
